This dressing table from the 1950’s was in fairly good shape but needed a makeover.
First the paintwork was refreshed – although it will rarely be seen.
A lined curtain was made to go around it. Three widths of fabric were used with header tape at the top and a decorative line of cream bias strip near the bottom.
The curtain was secured at the centre of the back, which was left flat, while both sides were pulled in for fullness and so they just met at the front.
For the dresser top, slightly oversized fabric and liner were placed on the top and the glass on top of that.
A band was made up, with bias binding folded around the bottom and piping four inches up from that edge.
The band was basted onto the edge of the top cloth just shy of the stitch line securing the piping. It was held upwards – so the stitching could be seen – with fingers used to ensure the piping ran along the edge of the glass.
The overlap at the back was trimmed and marked. The top was removed and all parts sewn together.
The finished top was then placed back on the dresser and the glass slid into position.
