Victorian Nursing Chair

Victorian Nursing Chair start.

The restoration and reupholstering of this chair was followed by some rework and recovering.

The chair was purchased with a stained cover of a dubious colour. The braid was falling off, a castor was missing, the frame creaked and moved. Excellent challenge.

Victorian Nursing Chair Stripped.

All of the old upholstery was removed and the frame repaired, the wood work cleaned, stained, French polished, cut back and wax polished.

The missing castor was from a back leg and of white ceramic. A new pair were purchased and fitted to both back legs.

Victorian Nursing Chair first finish.

The inner seat back was remade with a stitched feathered edge and deep buttoning. The seat was remade using the original springs. The outer back was stuffed and covered. A hand wound cord was used to finish it off.

However, the front stitched and feathered edge did not fully follow the serpentine shaping and the cover material, while an improvement over the original, was rather dull. Decision was made to redo the seat front and use the opportunity to replace the cover.

In the second version, a cream cover was used with a new matching hand wound cord.
