Dining Seats

The original green chair

Two substantial Victorian dining seats, with fine carving and turned, fluted legs needed work.

As for many projects, the thought was this might be a Recovering project but in practice it was a Restoration project.

How two matching dining seats could finish up with such disparate covers will never be known but when identical covers were added, they became a pair once again.

A surprising old second blue cover

The polish work needed cleaning, waxing and polishing.

One of the chairs had collapsed webbing and split support hessian. The other had a second layer of blue fabric!

Seat cover and stuffings removed

The stuffings were freed, the old seat pads removed and the frames cleaned up.

The stripped outer back indicates cord to hold buttons

The fabric and hessian support layer were removed from the back.

This revealed that historically, there had been buttons – now covered on the front with newer stuffings.

The fabric and surround of the front pads were removed. The original stuffings of both the front and back were covered in woolguard.

Webbing added
Hessian support added over the webbing

The seats of both chairs had new webbing added.

A hessian layer was added over the webbing.

Seat stuffings added

The old stuffings were reconnected. New hair was added to the top and held in place with a calico layer.

Seat covered in woolguard
Double piping trim added to outer back

Cover  fabric was added to seat and both inner and  outer back.

The outer back was trimmed with double piping with the join wrapped at the bottom.

Double piping added to the covered seat

Care was taken for the piping to follow the shaping of the show wood.

The seat and inner back were also trimmed with double piping to complete the project.

Both seats completed, identical and ready to return

Ready to be returned!
