Leather Covered Carver

Seat on arrival

This well built Carver with Leather covered seat needed a new cover and a better padded seat.

The removal company label

It appears to have been moved or stored by Archer, Cowley & Co., Ltd. The link gives more information about the company that continued to operate until the 1980s but the label condition tells us they had this chair much earlier.

The original seat with sagging top
Green webbing under the frame

The seat pad was lifted out of the seat. It was turned over and the undercover removed to expose green webbing.

The old support cloth
The old compressed felt padding

The pad was turned over again and the cover lifted off.

Below this were layers of old padding, then a support cloth sitting on the green webbing.

The bare frame
New webbing

Everything was removed, leaving a clean frame.

New webbing was added, providing a firm flat base.

Felt added over rubberised horse hair
The new support cloth

The webbing was covered with support hessian.

New padding of rubberised horse hair and felt was added.

Barrier cloth added over the stuffings
The finished pad

Barrier cloth covered and shaped the padding before the new leather cover was added.

A new undercover was tacked on to complete the project.

The frame, showing many years of use, was given a polish and the new pad dropped into place.
