Reclining Chair

This Reclining Chair needed a new cover. While the seat stuffings were in good shape, the back stuffings needed to be replaced. The frame was also to be stripped and repainted by the owner – not practical with the upholstered seat in place – a further consideration.

The back was held in place and could be rotated with what appeared to be two bolts – passing through the arms and into the back. The base then slid along the frame.

With the back fabric removed the ends of rods – no screw, no bolts, just smooth rods – could just be hammered out. Simply held in place with just friction. And the seat and hinged back could be removed.

The inner front fabric, stuffings and webbing were removed to leave a bare back frame.

Just the cover was removed from the seat and some barrier cloth added – ready for its new cover.

At the back, new webbing was added, then support hessian, covered in barrier cloth.

The new cover was added to the inner back and seat.

At the back, support cloth and barrier cloth were added and the cover fabric to finish.

The last step, still with the seat separate from the frame, was to add piping ensuring it was kept away from the hinges and stayed above the bottom of the seat – which slides on the base when assembled.

The completed seat was put back into position and the two rods just knocked gently into the start of the holes through the back.

The chair was then returned to the owner, where the rods were pulled out, the frame rubbed down and painted before the rods were hammered completely home.
