Seat Inserts

The inserts with original covers

Padded seat inserts have been used for many years. These fit inside the seat frame of dining chairs in most cases. Alternatives, such as board based types, are generally screwed to the top of the frame.

Covers being removed from the inserts

All wear out with time and the stuffings compress. For these three inserts, a full restoration was needed.

For unknown reasons all of the covers were different – so the intention was  to get them made into a matching set.

The stripped frame

All the old fabric, earlier covers, stuffings, undercovers and webbing was removed.

The inner frames were cleared of nails, tacks and staples.

Webbing added to the insert
Hessian added over the webbing

With the frames cleaned up, rebuilding could start.

Stuffings of rubberised hair and felt covered in polyester wadding

First webbing was added, then hessian which together will give a firm support to the stuffings.

The finished recovered inserts

A 1” (2.5cm) thick layer of rubberised hair was added and covered in cotton wadding   .

Then FR polyester wadding was added and finally the new cover fabric.

To finish, a hessian undercloth was tacked on.

Job done!

Seat inserts are one way of adding a top to a dining or hall chair. The Seat Pads page has several other examples.
