Vintage Armchair

This armchair was probably made around the middle of the twentieth century.

The original covering.

The simple frame, which had no tack strips, was in good condition. The fabric was worn and needed replacing and, with the apparent lack of stuffings, meant this was to be a Restoration project – to completely strip and reupholster the chair.

The fabric and underlying stuffings were all removed, carefully noting how and where things were fixed. The sequence did not follow the traditional route.

The outer back and arms went first – the old foam padding over the arms and back had decayed to dust. Next the inner arms, then the seat cover fabric running around the outside (leaving the underlying layers) and lastly the inner back. The two surface buttons added nothing to the shaping and they were not be replaced.

The stripped frame.

Finally, the fabric cover of the seat was removed and the Pirelli webbing under that.

With the frame clear, the legs were repainted in a similar colour to the original, waxed, rubbed down and buffed, refreshing the appearance.

The seat rebuilt.

The seat was remade by tightening the Pirelli webbing and covering in hessian, polyester wadding and then calico.

Seat surround and inner back added.

An edging of the cover fabric was added around the front and sides of the seat, folding over onto the seat base – the seam will be covered when the cushion is in place.

This was followed by the inner back, again adding more stuffing over the top of the back and emphasising the lumbar support – all to improve comfort.

The inner arms added.

Next the inner arms were remade including thicker stuffings over the arms.

The outer back added.

The outer arms were completed next and then the outer back – hand slip stitched into place.

A trim of double piping was added around the tops of the front legs and an undercloth of hessian was tacked on under the seat.

The boxed loose cushion.

A new boxed cushion cover with piping was made for a new pad of wrapped luxury foam. This replaced the old worn cushion.
