Wicker Suite

The original pair of seats.

The Wicker Suite was purchased at a furniture auction. Although uncertain of it’s origin or age, it would have been made during the 20th Century.

Before upholstery work started, the frames were painted.

The wicker itself was in reasonable shape, however the upholstery was not! Clearly a restoration project.

The destroyed front stitched edge.

Once in the workshop, the sagging upholstery failed the “mallet test” and the front stitched edge was completely wrecked.

Old, slack webbing.
The disconnected springing.

Underneath, the old webbing sagged and, when removed, revealed springs that were poorly attached.

The only redeeming feature was that the stuffings across the seat were in reasonable condition and could be reused. They were freed and folded out of the way.

The repaired upholstery.

New webbing was added, the springs were firmly reattached and strung at their middle and top points with laid cord knotted and stretched from side to side and front to back.

New hessian was added, the old stuffings replaced and the destroyed front rebuilt with coir and stitched to form a rolled edge.

The finished seat before cushions added.

An FR layer of polyester wadding was added before the cover fabric of green velvet was added. This was cut in around the four legs and secured at front, back and sides.

The chairs and sofa all had loose cushions on seat and back. New pads of feather duvet covered foam were purchased.

New box covers were made with piped edges and zipped backs from textured velvet. The zips ran forward a few inches on both sides of the seat cushions to ease the process of inserting the pads, whereas the zips just went along the bottom side of the smaller back cushions.

The two finished seats.

This same process was repeated on both chairs and sofa to complete the project.

While this is a Restoration project all those cushions too can be treated as Soft Furnishings. Take a look.
