This lovely chair arrived as a frame with no notes on it’s earlier appearance or what upholstery had been removed. The frame had been restored and was ready to be upholstered although much of the wood was fragile from damage by many earlier tacks.
The wire around the back of the frame indicated it was French and the white flecks in the deeper parts of the carvings suggested it had been painted at some time.

The three back panels were separately upholstered with their visible sides raised and rounded by easing stuffings to the edges with a regulator. The cover was close stapled on and trimmed along that line. Hand wound cord was glued on, covering the line of staples.

The seat was now added – with the back panels protected – built with webbing, springs and layers of stuffings and fabric in the traditional way. The front rolled edge followed the shaping at the front, with hand wound cord added along the lower edge of the cover fabric.

Finally the back was covered with three pieces of fabric, added symmetrically from centre to sides, matching the two side panels. The tight fabric forming gentle curves around the chair.
The panels were all finished with more cord with buttons over the joins.
Time to sit down!
