These modern Bar Stools were in need of new covers. The original covers of faux leather on three of the stools were looking rather tatty – curiously, the fourth seat was in great shape.
Each cover had a central seam on the inner back, continuing on the rear with a zip closure. The idea was to make the new cover but without this central seam.
All four of the seats had been taken off their metal bases and here we follow the story of one of them.

The stool was turned on it’s face and the undercloth removed.
The fixings for the seat cover were removed but the cover was still held in place.

The sacrificial zip was pulled apart and the cover could be removed.
The black piece of fabric was sewn to both the back of the seat cover and bottom of the inner back cover – and held those two pieces in place at the back of the seat.

With the black fabric pulled out, the seat fabric could be peeled off and back fabric with it.
The stripped seat was now ready for it’s new cover.

First, the seat cover was added. This was fixed in place on all sides – so the back edge was pulled through to the back and stapled in place under the seat.

The back cover was made from two pieces, sewn together across the top and down the side but only to where the sides started to turn in again. This avoided the need for a central seam.
The cover was pulled on, hand sewn down the remainder of the side seams with the lower edges both secured under the seat base – first the inner fabric pulled through the gap and secured, then the outer back.
A new undercloth completed the project.
