Buttoned Stool

The stool with original cover

The reproduction Buttoned Stool was well made and nicely finished. A new cover was wanted to fit into the decor.

This buttoned stool is the partner piece of the Buttoned Armchair.

Close up of the leg break

However, it had suffered over the years. One leg had a break and while the seat pad looked secure, the support cloth was ripped and the polypropylene webbing had damage – these needed to be replaced.

To start, the stool was turned upside down and the break on the leg was seen. It could not be repaired at this point – the stuffings and fabric held the break closed.

The undercloth was removed, revealing the button anchors on a ripped support cloth that still bore the signature of the original maker. The button anchors were clipped, freeing the buttons.

The cover had a cord trim. Both were removed, exposing the foam top.

Stool with foam padding removed

The foam was removed. The damaged webbing was also removed but the old, ripped support cloth, signed by the original maker was left in place.

It was fortuitous that the seat support was to be replaced as this allowed the broken leg to be gently pulled apart, glue applied and the break repaired.
