Dining Chairs

The original pair of dining chairs
An original chair

These two carver dining chairs, with lots of fine detail, needed new covers and quite a lot more.

The covers were removed – revealing an earlier red cover. This was left on.

One arm of a chair had a broken joint. This was pulled apart, cleaned and reglued.

Filling the gap

However, although  repaired, there was still a noticeable gap which was filled with wax. Once polished, the joint looked fine.

Polish work - before and after

The polish work was faded and greyed with time. This was refreshed to return the original gleam.

Recovering chairs is often more than just replacing the cover.

In this project, repairing joints and refreshing the polish work were important. In other projects repairing damage, superficial and more dramatic, or re-fixing or replacing castors are other examples of what is involved.

The decayed undercloths were replaced.

Chairs with FR polyester wadding

The chairs old covers were covered in FR polyester wadding to  comply with current safety legislation.

The finished chairs

The new covers were added to seat and arms.

Double piping, made with material cut across the cloth rather than on the bias, was added, pattern matching across the front of the seat.

Project complete.
