This large stool needed a new cover which would match other items in the home – a good reason! The edges of the recovered stool were to have domed nails along the sides.
The first task was to unscrew and remove the legs. It was noted that the fixing screws were missing from all the legs.

Next the undercover, with a central zip, was removed – and a bag with the four fixing screws for the legs was found inside.

The cover, a single piece of fabric with sewn corners, was taken off.

With the stool stripped, the structure could be seen. The main structure was a box made of OSB, the bottom edges reinforced with pieces of wood, narrower pieces along the long sides and wider pieces on the short sides which included the fixing points for the legs. The sides and top of the box had a foam covering. Simple but effective.

To recover, a single piece of fabric was added over barrier cloth onto the stool top. The addition of barrier cloth ensures compliance with current fire safety legislation. Both were secured under the frame. The corners were pleated – unlike the original sewn corners.

Nails were added, spaced along the lower edge of the frame.
To finish the project, a new under cloth was added and the legs screwed back on, this time including the securing screws to hold them in place.
Not all stools are equal! The Finn Juhl stool and the Chesterfield stool were both made in the 20th century with completely different construction methods. And of course JBerryUpholstery make bespoke Upholstered Coffee Table Stools.
