For those with an astonishingly good memory, this chair is almost identical to another recovered and posted here over four years previously. See it HERE.

They are in fact a pair, now owned by two sisters – one each – whose grandfather had won these two Art Deco Library Chairs as a prize for winning a fishing contest around a century ago. Lovely tale.

This chair had bookshelves on one side – very suitable – and a bar on the other – excellent innovation!
The chair was taken into the workshop. Clearly the old fabric needs replacing. The seat cushion was removed – a new cover will be made for it.

With the chair on it’s back the nails around the edge were removed.
Next came the cover fabric under which was some padding.

With that removed, the back layer of cover fabric supported by webbing was revealed.

And that was removed to leave a clean back.
The back legs had some damaged polish work and that was tidied up.
The new cover was added in the reverse manner. So back fabric, padding with a strip of webbing to reinforce the shaping.

Once the cover fabric was added, decorative nailing was added around the periphery.

As the pieces of fabric were cut out, care was taken to match the patterning of this bright new cover – so, the two sides of the back of the seat and both faces of the cushion.

The cushion pad was pushed into its new cover to complete the project.
