Modern Armchair

The seat with original cover

This modern armchair with faux leather cover had suffered at the hands of children and needed recovering.

The screws holding the base frame were removed and from there the screws holding the seat could also be removed.

Chair base with seat removed

The leather for both the seat and frame was held with staples and was pulled free.

One single piece of the new fabric was used to cover the seat, seams stitched at the back and sides. Staples were used to secure the edges which will be hidden.

The finished chair

Three pieces of fabric were used to cover the inside of the frame. They were positioned inside out and the seams marked and basted, before being removed and machine stitched together. The top edges were stitched to the stuffings, the bottom edges stapled under the frame.

Two pieces covered the outside. A central seam was used and the fabric pulled around the sides to the front of the arms. Top and bottom edges were secured in the same way as the inside fabric.

A long strip was made up to run around the back and arms edged on both sides with piping. The width varied and the strip was shaped to curve around the sides of the back and fronts of the arms. The strip was slip stitched in place and stapled under the frame.

The seat and lower frame with legs were fixed on to complete the project.

Much improved!
