Oak Bench

The fine but worn tapestry

Sometimes a project has some to and fro – like this one! Working with the owner, the old but treasured embroidered cover was removed, cleaned and remains on the Oak Bench – although hidden from sight!

Under the bench top

The stool top was removed from the base and turned over.

W Frank Gadsby label attached to base

The bottom had a label stapled on from W. Frank Gadsby Ltd who are still in business. Presumably they had originally covered the stool in the embroidery.

The undercover was removed leaving the edges of the tapestry visible.

The tapestry was secured under the bench top

The fixings were removed and the tapestry taken off.

Lifting the base

The construction was simple – a board supported some foam and the whole wrapped in the tapestry.

The old tapestry before cleaning

These pieces were lifted away to leave the tapestry.

That was sent back to the owner who had it carefully cleaned.

Barrier cloth over the original, cleaned tapestry and better padded bench top

On return, the old materials were put back plus some additional new padding.

The finished bench from above

The tapestry was reattached and the whole covered in a barrier cloth.

New base cloth added to the bench top

The new cover fabric was added, the completed seat turned over and a new undercloth added.

The finished stool

The newly covered seat was dropped back onto the oak frame and the bench returned to its owner. Mission complete.
