Outdoor Cushions

For many projects, the old materials and stuffings cannot be reused and are thrown away. With this project though, nothing got wasted and is probably the best example of recycling and reusing I have ever been involved in!

Two huge outside cushions needed covers. They consisted of several layers of other cushion pads – already reused!

They were too large to store easily so they needed to be divided, resulting in four cushions which will be used again in an ‘L’ shape fitted into an outdoor, covered corner.

The sawn edge of one cushion

Each cushion was cut into two – the smaller cushion divided into two pieces of the same size and the larger, shaped pad, cut into two unequal pieces.

All the raw, sawn edges held in place with duct tape

The cushions were actually made from several layers of different foams and covers, held together with strapping of various types. The newly cut edges were bound with duct tape.

The pads covered in polyester wadding and then stockinette

Each cushion was wrapped in polyester foam and then covered in stockinette.

The cover fabric was cut out based on the measurements plus a seam allowance. The pieces were oriented to keep the pattern upright when in use.

The gussets were prepared. Zip sections were added at the back of the covers and the seams for the rest of the gusset moved to the sides.

Each zip section was made from two pieces of fabric with an overlong zip sewn in the centre and hidden with folds of fabric. The zip pull was moved inwards and the excess trimmed.

The finished cushions from one corner

The rest of the gusset was attached to one end of the zip section and clipped to the top cover piece. Once the length was established the ends were sewn together to complete the gusset.

This was sewn to the top piece and, with care on alignment, the bottom piece of the cover fabric was added. The zips were pulled apart and the covers turned right side out.

The finished cushions from the front

The cushion pads were slipped into the covers to complete the project.

All were returned to the owner for more years of use.
