Parker Knoll Armchair

This Parker Knoll, model #731 was in need of a new cover and seat pad but was otherwise in pretty good condition.

The cushion was removed, revealing the spring supports and the three fabric pieces framing them.

The two side pieces were held on with narrow pieces of back tack strip to the sides – and they were removed.

At the back of the chair, the fabric was sewn on around the sides with gimp pins securing the lower edge. That was taken off and the fixings holding the inner back fabric were removed.

Back at the front, the fabric was pulled free, exposing the calico layer underneath.

The front springs were covered with a padded wrap, secured inside the frame and, with back tack strip, to the chair front. The fabric and polyester padding were removed.

There were two items needing attention. The very front spring had been held with metal eyelets inset to pieces of canvas but these had pulled free. Two staples were hammered into the frame to create new anchors and the spring was pulled and hooked back into place.

The second issue was that the stuffings had compressed at the top of the back. The calico was freed around the top, new hair stuffings were added to regain a curved shape and the calico reattached.

New fabric was cut out and attached to the inner back over barrier cloth, cutting in around the arms and also folded in around the back frame before being secured.

A new front cover was added, wrapped around the front springs and well padded.

Two new side pieces were added over narrow pieces of back tack strip.

Support cloth was added at the back and fabric sewn on to complete the back.

A cover was made for the new foam seat pad – care being taken to align the pattern on the top and front of the cover to the pieces on the back and seat front.

With the new seat cushion in place, the project was complete.
