The rattan chair was in need of a new cover for both the fixed back cushion and the loose seat cushion. This is just one of our featured Transformations.

The seat cushion was lifted out leaving the supporting elastic strapping.
The trim and cover of the back, held with staples and metal strip, was all removed.

Under the front fabric was an older covering, held in place with tacks, and that too was removed. The cotton felt layer was left in place.
At the back, the old hessian cover had stretched over time. It was partially released to reveal one piece of jute webbing.

The webbing was tightened and secured back in place. The hessian was also tightened to give a firm back.

New fabric was attached to the front along the bottom edge, with polyester wadding underneath and secured with back tack strip.
The fabric was pulled up, secured at the front up to the arms then fixed to the back for the remainder of the sides and top.

Piping was stapled to all four sides of the back, overlaid with back tack strip except the lower edge.

Fabric was attached along the bottom and secured with a final piece of back tack strip and overlaid with polyester wadding.
The fabric was pulled up, pinned, then slip stitched to complete the back.

A new boxed and zipped cover for the seat pad was made up. Separated layers of the pad were glued back together and the pad wrapped in FR polyester wadding before being inserted into the cover.

The cushion was slipped into place to complete the project.
All finished!
For this project, the box cushion was part of the design. Box cushions can also be made as separate Soft Furnishings projects.
JBerryUpholstery has many examples of furniture Recovering and Restoration and also Soft Furnishings to add to or complement the finished items. You can see pictures of these in the Galleries– Recovering Gallery, Restoration Gallery, Soft Furnishings Gallery and Transformations.
