This stool was treated as if it only needed Recovering – clearly a new cover was needed.

On closer inspection it was also clear that there was some issue with the stuffings with a noticeable bulge to one side and sunken top.

The cover was removed, as was a layer of cotton wadding beneath, to reveal a calico layer.
The calico was loosened around the bulge. Stuffings of hair and rubberised hair, supported by hessian and webbing, were held in place by a roll around the edge which was poorly secured to the frame. The loose roll was pushed back into place and fixed firmly in place.
To ensure other movement would not occur in future, the calico was removed entirely and the roll fixed in place all round.
With the side repaired, the calico was fixed back in place and new cotton wadding added.

This was covered in a layer of woolsafe. This flexible layer would further hold the stuffings in place while ensuring the stool complied with fire safety legislation.
The new cover was then attached, working from the centre of sides towards the corners.

At the corners, the surplus fabric was cut away, the corner folded and stapled along the frame.
The seams were slip stitched to close.
Braid was glued on to finish the work.
Very tidy!
This stool is one of our featured Transformations. Please take the time to look at a few more of them.
Often more is needed to be done on a project than simply adding new fabric. While this is one of our Recovering projects, there can often be a little Restoration work required.
