This study chair needed a new cover.

One arm was loose – and needed repairs.
Both arms had their fabric and the foam padding worn away.

The chair was produced by Thomas Glenister’s – long gone but with an interesting history.
The chair was tipped on it’s back and the under cloth removed to reveal the zig-zag springing.

Upright again, the back fabric was removed – again revealing zig-zag springing.

The fabric was removed from the foam seat and the felt padded back.
The fabric for the arms was removed along with the foam wrap.

The broken arm was split at the back and held on with a bent screw. The movement of the arm had led to the front joint failing as well. The joints were cleaned and glued back in place – the bent screw replaced with a dowel.
The show wood was rubbed down, smoothing the sun affected polish. Stain reduced the visibility of some superficial knocks and then polish was applied.

The recovering work started by adding some new wadding to both arms. Barrier cloth was added over the arms, as well as the seat and inner back to ensure conformance with current fire safety legislation.
The new fabric was added over the arms. Care was taken to ensure the arm fabric pattern mirrored each other – as the fabric made that possible.

Next the new fabric was added to the seat and back. This time symmetry was carefully considered.
Barrier cloth, also acting as support, was added to the back. Fabric was then added, sewn at the sides, stapled under the seat.

Finally an undercover was added to complete the project.

Chairs come in an amazing variety of styles which have evolved over the last few centuries. A good selection can be found on this website.
