Cushions come in many shapes and sizes. On this page we describe the way we divide them up – types of cushion, trims, buttoning, straps, zips and pad types.
If a cushion is needed as part of your project with JBerryUpholstery, then look at the options and choose wisely!

Types of cushion cover are either made from two pieces of fabric joined together or with a gusset between the two giving a more defined thickness. throw or box. More complex covers can be made to fit complicated spaces.

Trims add a decorative touch as well as disguising seams. Attached trims that can be used with all cushions include piping and cord. The edges may also be finished with extra sewn lips or added frills.

Ties are used to make surfaces flatter. They can just catch threads on either side, knots can be added for a bit more interest, including tufts – pre-made or created from hand wound cord – can be very attractive additions and buttons covered in the same or complementary fabric are frequently used.
The kitchen seat cushion here uses buttons. Window seats and back cushions can also benefit from ties.
Straps or ties are used to secure cushions to the seat – kitchen seats or outside seats. The ties can be fabric strips that can be tied or secured with hook and loop tape or buttons.

Zips make it easier to remove pads for cleaning. Where they are not used, the gap needed to insert the pad can be sewn – slip stitched by hand or top stitched by machine. If the back of the cushion is left as an envelope as here – with two overlapping pieces of fabric – then the opening can be left as is, buttoned – as in the example – or have velcro strips added.
Pads used include feathers (duck, goose, chicken etc.), fibre (micro fibre or hollow fibre) or foam (all kinds of grades). They can be mixed too – feather wrapped foam is a very comfortable option for seats. Box cushions often use foam pads but feather or fibre can be used. Feather or fibre pads are generally used for throw cushions.

Projects such as the Window Cushions have unusually been hand made (no machine!) using traditional stuffing (coir) with tufts on all sides including the boxed edges and finished with hand wound cord. Slightly OTT.
