Loose cushions are often used for seating on chairs, sofas and benches and also as bed bases. They are generally filled with foam. Removable covers can also be cleaned if necessary.
All have to be the right size and shape, with thickness and firmness decided by application.
There are several ways they can be made. The images here have a few examples.
The G-Plan Chair Pair included loose seat cushions over the sprung base.
The Vintage Armchair and the recovered Laura Ashley Chair both had loose seat cushions.
The Wicker Suite had rectangular seat and back cushions on the chairs and sofa.
The Shaped Cushions made the entire seat, fitting to the shape of a fixed wooden platform with curved back.
Another use of loose cushions were 3 metre long Pew Cushions.
The Boat Bed set of twelve large and variously shaped cushions made a large bed, converting in the day to two seats.
The cushions had to fit to the curved and sloping sides, around protruding items and act as a jigsaw to create the bed.
The final example is of the two Window Seat cushions – stuffed using coir and hair rather than modern foam.
