These mattress toppers were needed for a boat bed. The topper was to fit onto the two shaped pieces making up the mattress. Shaping was complex to fit the cabin and follow the curving sloped sides of the cabin.

Two standard rectangular mattress toppers were used. The covers of these were removed and the outlines of the mattress pieces were marked onto the toppers. One mattress was a few inches longer than the mattress topper.
Taking note of the slope of the sides as well as the shape of the mattress pieces, shaped pieces of mattress topper were cut out. For one, a small extra piece was securely glued on to extend it.

The mattress toppers were then used as templates to mark soft white Terry towelling. Four pieces were made to fit the two shapes – one for the top and the other for the bottom.
Strips of fabric were cut to make the gussets. The section along the sloping side needed to be wider and the two zip sections pieces were narrower.

The gussets were made up to fit around each corner. A small pocket was included for the zip pull to be hidden in, avoiding the possibility of damage to the vessel.

The gusset was sewn to the top and bottom pieces of fabric to complete the covers.

The covers were turned right side out and the toppers inserted. All done!
