Modern Parker Knoll

Parker Knoll still continues to make excellent furniture in England after 150 years. We have documented the restoration of an older model, the PK708, and recovering of another older model, the PK988.

Chair on arrival

Here we have a much more modern Parker Knoll winged armchair. A new cover was wanted even though the original was still in good shape.

The modern build gives rise to many changes of materials used and construction methods – lots to learn!

Prie Dieu

The original chair

These chairs became very popular in the 19th century – derived from the earlier ‘prayer chairs’ they lost the shelf for the bible at the back and became more chair like rather than something to kneel on.

However, they still retained the top piece for resting elbows on while praying.

Finished chair from font

This example had a sound frame but the shaping was far more rounded than it should have been. The story of its restoration includes the details of the reshaping – those details can be read here or by clicking on an image.

Winged Chair

The chair before work started

This is the first Winged Chair where the wings came off! Deliberately by the way, not by accident.

Seat entirely cleared

The grubby calico cover had to go, the sagging webbing replaced – and actually the entire seat – so lots to do.

The end result was worth it.

Hall Chair

This is a curious little project. The chair had been thrown out – for good reason!

The loose seat insert had been restored – just needed a new cover.

The wobbly chair had also been glued and was now sound.

But the frame still looked awful!

This project is all about restoring an item that looks fit for the dump – well, “recycling centre” these days!

Victorian Buttoned Chair

This ornate Victorian chair was obviously in a horrible state – but worse lay beneath those covers!

Clearly the filthy cover needed to be replaced – a quick glance tells you that. And yes, on closer inspection, the front carvings are dull, so a good clean and polish will be needed.

But what cannot be seen are the malodorous feathers all around the springs. They were discovered only when work started!

Such are the joys of an upholsterer!

Rather a lot of hours later, the chair with new seat, polished woodwork and a bright new cover could be returned to the owners.

Winged Chair

The chair on arrival

On the surface, this enormous Winged Chair looked sound. But problems lurked inside!

Spring bed tied into place

From metal webbing, collapsed stuffings, rotten fabric to mysterious straps the tale can be followed HERE or by clicking on any of the images.

Rocking Horse – Neddy

Neddy on arrival

This Rocking Horse called Neddy, arrived with no rockers – but then he had far to travel – from the USA!

He has been welcomed to the growing herd of Rocking Horses. See Dobbin and Butler too.

Naked Neddy after fabric removed

Neddy was stripped before having first an under cover, then the new fabric coat – with mane and tail plus the retained eyes.

The tack, saddle and the rest, including ears, were made and carefully added.

Neddy was boxed up, ready to be shipped back to the US.

Dining Chair

The chair with original seat

Working very carefully can sometimes avoid repair work. And that was the case here.

The seat of this attractive dining chair was breaking away from the frame and had to be replaced.

To see how it was done, click HERE or on any of the images.

Winged Chair

The chair with loose cover

This attractive chair, another winged chair, had a very soft seat that needed complete replacement.

The original cover dating from 1954 – if we believe the inscription discovered on the frame – was curiously complicated.

Front springs secured

Once the chair was stripped and the seat removed, rebuilding could start.

I’ve included a lot of detail of this interesting project, fine result. See it HERE or click on any of the images.
