Laura Ashley Chair

The seat ready for work.

This modern Laura Ashley Chair had a grubby cover and it needed to be replaced.

Chair stripped.

The old cover was removed and fortunately the frame lent itself to being recovered.

With a clean and vibrant cover on, this chair will give many more years of comfortable service.

Library Chair

The chair on arrival.

This Art Deco Library Chair is one of a pair – the other got it’s new cover over 4 years ago.

They are the only chairs with a built in bar I have ever seen!

You can see the other half of the pair on THIS LINK.

Parker Knoll

The chair with original cover

This Parker Knoll, model #731, was in need of a new vibrant cover.

The seat pad was replaced and the stuffings at the top of the back were reshaped but otherwise the chair was in good condition.

Victorian Tub Chair

The finished chair with new seat cover in place

This delightful chair, with new fabric and revived polish work, will give many more years of service.

Mind you, the seat needed some attention and a new seat pad was needed as well.

Whether or not this is a tub chair is a bit moot since the arms are much lower than the back.

The fabric provided for those covers was a striped, textured velvet giving an uneven fabric surface to work with.

Oak Bench

The fine but worn tapestry

Sometimes a project has some to and fro – like this one!

Working with the owner, the old but treasured embroidered cover was removed, cleaned and remains on the Oak Bench – although hidden from sight!

The finished stool

The tapestry was probably added by W Frank Gadsby who are still in business in Leicester. The price of £11.55 tells us this was after decimalisation – so later than 1971.

Two Seater Sofa

Sofa in original cover with new seat cushion and cover

This Two Seater Sofa needed a new cover.

A new seat cushion had already been made with the Winged Chair project – a seemingly similar design but in practice there were many differences.

The finished sofa from the front

The sofa was stripped, then the new cover added, trimmed with decorative nails. To see the details follow this LINK or click on any of the images.

Dining Chairs

Dining chairs are ‘simple’, as there is just one upholstered section. Fabric to top and bottom with stuffings between – same story as for stools.

Chair with beige cover
The six recovered dining chairs

These dining chairs were given new covers – spicing up the dining room! You can see the details following this link or clicking on either of the images.

A simple change with dramatic results!

Our website has several other examples where the seat is attached to the frame with fabric or screwed on or fitted in a frame or held with pegs – and many varieties of those. A ‘simple’ idea made complicated!

Reclining Chair

Logistics!

The original chair in frame.

Reclining Chairs of this style use a simple pivot and sliding base. This chair needed to be recovered but additionally the frame needed to be repainted – not really practical with the seat attached.

The chair frame.

The details of how that was achieved are in the project page – click any image.

One step was to take the chair out of the frame and then recover it.

But the frame still needed to be painted! Check out the very different final result HERE!

The finished chair - but unpainted frame.
