Winged Chair

The original chair.

This attractively shaped Winged Chair was definitely in need of a new cover. The thin and not very well shaped stuffings needed help!

The stripped arms and back.

To sort out the stuffings, the chair was stripped of everything except the seat.

With minor damage to the polish work repaired, the chair was remade and a new cover added.

Dining Chairs

One chair as received

These four elegant dining chairs needed new covers – but finished up having new seats.

The curiously unused sides to the base frame remains a puzzle but the new covers were added to make an elegant dining set.

Materials used were a mixture of traditional and new. To see the full story, click an image or follow this LINK.

Nursing Chair

The chair with original cover

This reproduction Nursing Chair with much sentimental value needed a new cover to fit to different decor. The chair was made by Wade spring which introduced the zig-zag springs used here in the 70’s.

The finished seat from the front

The project held surprises – typical of more modern furniture!

Bentwood Chair

The original seat

A new cover to fit in with new decor was wanted for this modern Bentwood Chair.

The chair was manufactured by TON, the Czech heir to the legacy of bentwood innovator Michael Thonet, who established a furniture factory in 1861 and still bending wood!

The way the upholstery was held in place again surprised, showing the innovative ideas applied to modern furniture.

Bedroom Ironback

Original chair - loose cover, no buttons.

This delightful chair with its very floppy back, held, as for so many projects, a host of surprises.

The chair had a loose cover, using an identical fabric to the fixed cover below – but with buttons.

Iron backs were very popular in Victorian times but while this chair was old, it was still much newer.

The chair seat.
The chair back.

To restore the chair, the back and seat had to be separated, then rejoined. That’s unusual!

The end result, covered in a heavy, robust fabric, was quite a sight.

The finished seat.

Iron Back

The seat in original cover

Iron Back chairs were popular in Victorian times. The back was made from bent iron bars – cheaper than wood at the time – making upholstering a challenge.

This lovely example needed a new seat and back castors as well as a new cover.

Winged Chair – A Restoration Project

Chair in original cover

This attractively shaped winged chair probably dating from around the middle of the last century when Parker Knoll, G-Plan and others started using the tension springs that support the seat of this chair.

While the chair and seat cushions needed new covers, the seat front was falling off, other joints needed repairing, springs needed reseating and the polish work was dulled – definitely a restoration project.

Prie Dieu

The original chair

These chairs became very popular in the 19th century – derived from the earlier ‘prayer chairs’ they lost the shelf for the bible at the back and became more chair like rather than something to kneel on.

However, they still retained the top piece for resting elbows on while praying.

Finished chair from font

This example had a sound frame but the shaping was far more rounded than it should have been. The story of its restoration includes the details of the reshaping – those details can be read here or by clicking on an image.
