Winged Chair – A Restoration Project

Chair in original cover

This attractively shaped winged chair probably dating from around the middle of the last century when Parker Knoll, G-Plan and others started using the tension springs that support the seat of this chair.

While the chair and seat cushions needed new covers, the seat front was falling off, other joints needed repairing, springs needed reseating and the polish work was dulled – definitely a restoration project.

Nautical Mattress Topper

Previous posts have commented on the ‘simple’ nature of stools and dining chairs – fabric to top and bottom with stuffings between.

The same comment applies to cushions of course – and these toppers were basically cushions.

However these mattress toppers were needed for a boat bed. They had to fit together and be precisely shaped with sloping sides to match the curving sloped sides of the cabin.

The finished mattress topper pair.

Not so simple!

Leather Carver Chair

Seat on arrival

The majority of upholstery projects have a fabric cover. For this solidly built Carver Chair, a replacement leather cover over new padding was wanted.

Making a new pad for a dining chair insert, although it has quite a lot of steps, is one of the simpler tasks an upholsterer will be presented with – and so it proved.

The completed seat

Starting point was a sunken and unyielding seat. End result was a softly rounded pad, comfortable to sit on.

Modern Parker Knoll

Parker Knoll still continues to make excellent furniture in England after 150 years. We have documented the restoration of an older model, the PK708, and recovering of another older model, the PK988.

Chair on arrival

Here we have a much more modern Parker Knoll winged armchair. A new cover was wanted even though the original was still in good shape.

The modern build gives rise to many changes of materials used and construction methods – lots to learn!

Prie Dieu

The original chair

These chairs became very popular in the 19th century – derived from the earlier ‘prayer chairs’ they lost the shelf for the bible at the back and became more chair like rather than something to kneel on.

However, they still retained the top piece for resting elbows on while praying.

Finished chair from font

This example had a sound frame but the shaping was far more rounded than it should have been. The story of its restoration includes the details of the reshaping – those details can be read here or by clicking on an image.

Winged Chair

The chair before work started

This is the first Winged Chair where the wings came off! Deliberately by the way, not by accident.

Seat entirely cleared

The grubby calico cover had to go, the sagging webbing replaced – and actually the entire seat – so lots to do.

The end result was worth it.
